Graphite has seen a massive turnaround in the past two years and has become a highly marketable processed commodity that will be a key ingredient for breakthroughs in materials technology. New “green energy” and technology applications such as lithium-ion batteries, solar power, nuclear power, supercapacitors (fuel cells) and the high-tech material graphene are driving demand for graphite and have the potential to infl uence rapid growth in this market signifi cantly. In 2017, Canada’s graphite mine production, for example, amounted to 30,000 metric tons.
The SGS report mentions that fi ne grinding would be required to obtain optimal results, therefore, may not be economical; finer grinding is more expensive. However, the SGS report does not detail the high-quality nature of the graphite hosted therein. According to Dr. Conly of Lakehead University (MX report) graphite at Rockstone is pristine, hexagon and of hydrothermal origin formed at a temperature of about 700 C. Due to the high quality of graphite present, some metallurgical eff ort to refi ne it economically is warranted. SGS was able to obtain 65% recovery by grinding to about 12 microns.
